Visit Ciutadella
in Menorca
Come and discover the treasures hidden in Ciutadella.
Ciutadella is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and visited towns on the island. Its historical past, streets full of charm, make it an obligatory stop in Minorca. Its main attractions are:

The old town
Protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest, it is one of the main tourist resources on the island, as most of the monumental and historical buildings of Ciutadella are to be found there: palaces, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, Ses Voltes street and busy squares full of shops and restaurants.
What is known today as the Contramurada, a promenade that surrounds the entire walled old town until the 19th century, marks the limits of the old Ciutadella and the great architectural difference between the old town and the rest of the modern Ciutadella can be seen at a glance.
The cathedral of Menorca
Located in the heart of the old quarter, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, popularly known as the Cathedral of Menorca, is one of the most emblematic icons of Ciutadella. The Cathedral, in Catalan Gothic style, was built in the 14th century on the site of an old Muslim mosque by order of Alfonso III of Aragon. It has a single nave and several side chapels, the most outstanding of which is the Chapel of the Souls, a valuable example of 18th-century Menorcan Baroque.

The Plaça Des Born
(Plaça Des Born), the old parade ground of the city, is the gateway to the entrance of the historical centre of Ciutadella and is the site chosen as the setting for popular festivities, including the festivities of Sant Joan de Ciutadella (Saint John of Ciutadella). In the middle of the square presides the obelisk, 22 metres high, in commemoration of the heroic defence of Ciutadella against the Turkish attack in 1558. In the surrounding area there are several recommended places to visit: the Ciutadella Town Hall, the theatre, the Torre Saura Palace and the Salort Palace, among others.
Castle of San Nicolás
Bordering the sea and strategically located at the mouth of the port is the Castle of Saint Nicholas (Castillo de Sant Nicolau). It was built at the end of the 17th century to defend the port of Ciutadella and is different from the rest of Menorca’s watchtowers in that it is the most modern and elegant on the island.

The port of Ciutadella
The port is undoubtedly the gastronomic and leisure meeting point of Ciutadella, so it is a must to visit before leaving the city. Initially used for the commercial and fishing traffic of the old capital, it now houses a wide variety of restaurants, terraces, shops and pleasure boats.
The Municipal Museum of Ciutadella
It is located in the Bastion of Sa Font, built in 1677, and houses many of the island’s historical treasures. It is a general history and archaeology museum with a permanent exhibition on the history of Menorca, displaying palaeontological remains, jewellery and everyday objects. Temporary exhibitions on archaeological, historical and ethnological themes are also organised throughout the year.
